Canberra as a Global City?

Research by GCRP has shown the Canberra region has most of the requisite qualities to vie for the title of Global City.

Presentations by GCRP convenor Dr Richard Hu recently showed the Canberra region has the largest proportion of residents with a university qualification, and workers in research and innovation fields and high-level occupations, of any major city in Australia. It also had the highest proportion of households with access to broadband internet of any major Australian city. These qualities put Canberra in a strong position, even when compared to Australia's foremost Global City of Sydney, to be a base for service-based industries that are the backbone of modern cities.

However Dr Hu also pointed out that Canberra does not rate well on sustainability measures, and currently has a low proportion of workers in service-based industries such as finance, banking, law and marketing. The ability to overcome these will enhance Canberra's claims to the title of Global City
